Starting My Extremely-Downsized Life Tomorrow

I’m a 51 year old woman living in a 1270 sq ft home with a full, unfinished basement. I moved here about 10 years ago and still had boxes in the garage I never opened, but never threw away; until this year! I’m not a hoarder, but I did have a lot of junk that needed to be gone.

I live in this house now with my 2 dogs and 1 cat. We are together 24/7 because I work from home as a controller in the insurance industry. I spend a lot of time in this house that feels way too big for me and it stinks to waste so much money on this house, when it doesn’t feel like home really.

My family lives about 30 minutes north of me. All of them are together and I get texts and Facetimes many times a week and also go visit a few times a month on the weekends.

My family consists of my almost 34-year old son that I raised on my own since I was 17 years old. He is married for 6 years to a wonderful woman he’s known for over 10 years. They have made two of the most adorable kids in the world! Both have April birthdays, so my grandson is about 4 1/2 years old now and his sister is 2 1/2 years old.

And finally, my almost 69 year old mom lives with them. She has been their daily babysitter for over 4 years and they know how blessed they are to have daycare they can trust and my mom to be able to spend so much quality time with her great grandkids.

These 5 people are the biggest reason I am making such a big life change. But, in the end it will all be worth it!

Why Make Such A Big Change in Living Situation?

Our ultimate family goal is to combine our funds and build us a brand new, multi-generational home within the next year or two. This helps relieve my mom and son financially a little AND allows me to be a part of my grandkids’ daily life AND spend time with my elderly mom while I still have her.

So, tomorrow is the day I’m taking just a small amount of items to my son’s house and start this tiny-home style living. He changed his screened-in porch into a large room, I think about 200-250 sq ft. This will be my sleeping and working area. I’ll share the bathroom in the main house, the living room is where all the family activity happens and it’s just on the other side of the door to my room and the kitchen is always open. I can actually go to any part of the main house, but I’ll spend a majority of my day and night with my animals in my little space.

I know it’s going to be such a big change to go from quiet, peaceful days to hectic, loud days overnight. But, I’ll just keep reminding myself how blessed I am and that this set-up is only temporary.
